Mr Renier — Specialist SEN Maths Tutor

Mr Renier, SEN maths tutor

With 19 years of teaching experience, I specialise in supporting children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) to develop their mathematical understanding, confidence and independence. I believe that every learner can succeed in maths when it is explained in a way that makes sense to them. Often, the barrier is not ability, but finding the right approach.

My tutoring is fully bespoke and child-centred. I take time to understand each learner’s individual strengths, needs, interests, learning style and starting point, then tailor every lesson accordingly. My calm, patient and supportive approach uses practical, visual and step-by-step methods, with concepts broken down into manageable stages and regularly revisited to build secure understanding.

For me, tutoring is about much more than improving grades. It is about helping learners overcome anxiety, develop resilience, become more independent and recognise their own progress. Every achievement matters, whether that is mastering a new concept, tackling a problem independently or simply becoming more willing to have a go.

My ultimate aim is simple: to create a positive experience of mathematics where every learner feels understood, supported and capable, and begins to believe: “I can do maths.”

My hobbies include spending as much time with family and friends as possible, going to the gym, eating out, going for interesting walks, playing Padel and supporting my favourite football teams.

SEN maths tips for parents, carers and teachers

Simple ideas you can use straight away. Tap a tip.

Make numbers concrete

Try: real coins, counters, blocks, fraction strips and drawings before moving to the written sum.

Why it helps: Seeing and doing makes abstract ideas easier to grasp.

Use number lines and visuals

Try: number lines, 100 squares, bar models and colour-coding.

Why it helps: Visuals reduce what a learner must hold in working memory.

Break problems into small steps

Try: one step at a time, with a checklist: read, underline key numbers, choose the operation, solve, check.

Why it helps: Big problems become manageable.

Teach times tables in short bursts

Try: five minutes a day, using patterns, songs, games and one table at a time.

Remember: Understanding patterns beats rote memory alone.

Say "mistakes are how we learn"

Try: "Let's see what happened" and "Which part do you already know?"

Why it helps: Learners try again when mistakes don't feel shameful.

Reduce maths anxiety

Try: no timed pressure, deep breaths, short sessions and a calm space.

Remember: A worried brain can't do its best thinking. Regulate first, then learn.

Give time to think

Try: ask, pause, wait, and resist answering for them.

Remember: Silence often means thinking, not "I don't know".

Start with success

Try: begin with something familiar, then add the challenge.

Remember: Build confidence before you build difficulty.

Praise the process

Try: "You kept going on that tricky question" or "You checked your answer."

Remember: Praise effort and strategy, not only right answers.

Use their interests

Try: football scores, game points, cooking measures or saving for something they want.

Remember: Interest is a powerful way into maths.

Support isn't doing it for them

Try: a prompt, a worked example or a clue, then let them try again.

Remember: The goal is independence.

I’d really like to recommend Gino Renier to any parents looking for a great maths tutor who comes with the convenience of visiting your home!

Gino has been tutoring my son for his GCSE Maths, and I honestly can’t speak highly enough of him. My son has grown so much in confidence. Gino has a brilliant way of explaining things that just seem to click. He’s patient, encouraging, and genuinely cares about helping his students succeed.

I was also amazed by the progress he made with my older son a couple of years back. After just a few months of tutoring with Gino, he achieved the Grade he needed in his final exam. That result opened up opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support he gave him.

Gino teaches students of all abilities from Year 5 right through to Year 11. Whether your child needs help catching up, wants to build confidence, is preparing for SATs or GCSEs, … genuinely invested in helping children do their best, I wholeheartedly recommend Gino. With the new school year approaching, now is a great time to get in touch and secure a space before his diary fills up as he’s taking on new students now.

Thank you, Gino, for everything you’ve done for our family. We couldn’t recommend you more highly!

We couldn’t be happier with the support our daughter has received. Her maths tutoring has really helped build her confidence and understanding, she has also loved having him previously teach her PE. He is always patient, encouraging and makes learning enjoyable. We’ve seen such a lovely difference in our daughter and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a caring and dedicated tutor. xx

Mr Renier supported my daughter through her Maths GCSE when she struggled to access a school setting. He was friendly, understanding, patient and very professional, would definitely recommend.

Gino is very approachable. He is everything that I wish my math teacher would have been when I was at school, especially for a subject everyone has a complex about anyway. He takes the time to listen to your point of view, then he takes the best bits and offers what he thinks in a clear concise way... a great starting place for a great teacher.
